  2. Dear Dr. Kathrada: I am a Welding vocational Instructor in British Columbia Canada. Part of our curriculum is PPE. We train welders who may work in some of the most dangerous industries, like Pulp Mills, Oil Refineries, and Chemical Plants. We instruct to OSHA, NIOSH, CSA 117.2, Z49, and B.C. Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

    I have been studying the Sars-Cov-2 virus and procedures that the WHO and CDC have suggested to the world since March 2020. I decided to learn what is a virus. What is the size of a virus? What is the purpose of a vaccine?

    The size of the Sars-Cov-2 virus is 60 to 140 nano meters. That does not mean much does it, however, it would take 25,400,000 of them to make one inch. A NIOSH N95 respirator is particulate filtering. It protects against particulates, but not gases or vapors. Fit testing is critical for optimum protection. Any respirator should have a one-way exhaust valve to exhaust the CO2 that we humans produce by breathing Oxygen and Nitrogen.

    An N95 mask can prevent a particle size down to .3 microns / 300 nano meters from going through the respirator. So an N95 respirator cannot prevent 100% of the sars-Cov-2 virus from entering a human’s nose or mouth, and certainly not entering the eyes. It is beneficial for large droplets of the virus such as sneezing and coughing. It will help prevent spittle and flem from being projected onto another person that is in close proximity. Of course, the person wearing the respirator will retain a large viral load of the virus.

    As far as dust masks go, they have far less ability to protect a person from Sars-Cov-2. Home-made masks are not good at all because they are not professionally engineered and certified.

    What about people that are making homemade masks, two or three layers thick for Grandma. Will Grandma be able to take in enough Oxygen for her to function and will she be able to exhaust the CO2 that she exhales?

    What about bacteria that builds up in masks, or respirators that are stored in people’s pockets, Automobile glove compartments, or left on tables for any length of time?

    OSHA and NIOSH have stated Threshold Limit Values (TVL’s) Time Weighted Averages (TWA’s) and Short Term Exposure Limits (STEL’s) for masks, respirators as well as HEPA filters.

    There is a lot to consider. I hope this helps you.
